Plant Needs
Swamp Milkweed produces sturdy stems topped with rounded clusters of rose to mauve florets that bloom from summer through frost. The flowers rise above lance-shaped foliage and add soft color and structure to garden beds and cutting gardens.
Native to North America, this perennial plays an important ecological role. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds and serves as a larval host plant for monarch butterflies. In garden trials, this species performs nearly identically to the variety 'Soulmate.'
Plants grow 32–48 inches tall and return reliably in Zones 3–8. Well suited for borders, naturalized plantings, and pollinator gardens. Harvest when one-half to two-thirds of the florets are open for longest vase life.
Caution: The milky sap may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Exercise care when handling. The purchaser assumes all liability relating to the use of this product.
How to Sow
-
Start seeds indoors 7–9 weeks before the last frost.
-
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix and keep soil at 65–70°F.
-
Pot up early and avoid allowing seedlings to become rootbound.
-
Harden off and transplant outdoors after the last frost in full sun.
-
Space plants 12–24 inches apart.
(Direct sowing in fall or spring is also possible.)
