Matteuccia struthiopteris (Ostrich Fern)
A classic favorite for woodland and shade gardens, Ostrich Fern forms a large, elegant vase-shaped clump of gracefully arching, feather-like fronds. Emerging as tightly coiled fiddleheads in spring, the bright green fronds unfurl to create lush texture and a bold, architectural presence in the landscape.
Thriving in moist, rich soils, Ostrich Fern is ideal for naturalizing along shaded stream banks, woodland edges, and ravines. Once established, it can form dense colonies that fill shady spaces beautifully. Hardy and low-maintenance, this perennial fern adds timeless movement and structure to shaded borders and natural areas.
Why It’s a Creekside Champion™:
We love Ostrich Fern for its lush, dramatic presence and ability to thrive where other plants struggle. Its graceful fronds bring softness and texture to shaded gardens while remaining remarkably easy to grow and resistant to deer and rabbits.
