Plant Needs

Need height, structure, and year-round greenery—but want something native and low-maintenance? Squeeze Box® Inkberry Holly is ready to rise to the occasion. This upright, pyramidal evergreen brings a formal touch to your landscape while staying true to its tough, North American roots. It's perfect as a specimen, a vertical accent, or even a unique hedge for those who want something more refined than the usual.

But here’s the bonus: Squeeze Box is a male inkberry holly, which means it plays an essential role in your garden. When planted near female varieties like Gem Box® or Strongbox®, it helps them produce the signature blue-black berries that birds and gardeners both adore.

Best of all, Squeeze Box is not just good-looking—it’s tough. This variety handles deer, heat, salt, and poor soils like a champ. It’s evergreen, easy to grow, and full of purpose, making it a smart and beautiful choice for almost any space.

Why we love it:

  • The only inkberry holly with a tall, upright pyramidal habit

  • Evergreen, deer-resistant, and native to North America

  • Pollinates Gem Box® and Strongbox® hollies for fruit production

Uses Notes:

Squeeze Box inkberry holly is a male variety. It will not develop fruit, but if planted within 50'/15m of a female inkberry holly like Gem Box or Strongbox, they will develop berries. Squeeze Box can also be enjoyed on its own as a specimen, hedge plant, or garden plant. Its upright habit makes a great structure for holiday lights, too.

Maintenance Notes:

Inkberry holly is not drought tolerant, and does best in soils with consistent moisture. Can tolerate occasional periods of wet soil.

If you wish to prune, do so after it blooms in late spring.

Inkberry hollies make an excellent native alternative to boxwood. However, they are not quite as shade tolerant nor as deer resistant as boxwood is, so should be treated accordingly.

Nothing special is required in terms of fertilizer - one application of a granular (not liquid) fertilizer formulated for trees and shrubs in early spring is sufficient. May be fertilized monthly from early spring through late July if desired.
