Bright Spaces, Epiphyte, North Facing Windows, Specimen or Focal Point

  • For optimal performance, keep your Monstera at 60-85°F (15-29°C).
  • Monsteras perform best in bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight. They will tolerate lower light conditions, but will not grow as vigorously, and varieties like ‘Spotsylvania’ will not show their variegation as intensely. Some early morning or late evening sunlight may be tolerated and beneficial in the darker winter months, but monitor your Monstera for leaf burning if it is positioned in direct sunlight.
  • Monsteras appreciate higher humidity. You can help maintain humidity above 60% by using a humidifier, misting your Monstera, or keeping it on a pebble tray.
  • Monsteras prefer moist, but not soggy soil.  Be sure to water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Ensure good drainage and do not allow your Monstera to sit in water for extended periods of time, after it has received a good soaking.
  • Feed your Monstera once per month at half strength when it is actively growing. Reduce frequency of fertilization in the winter months. If no new leaves are growing, it does not need to be fertilized.
  • Protect furniture when watering & fertilizing.
  • When repotting your Monstera, use a chunky all-purpose potting mix, with additional orchid bark and perlite added, to ensure your Monstera has good drainage and plenty of nutrients.
  • Many Monsteras are capable of producing aerial roots that can cling to structures and help them climb. As such, your Monstera may benefit from having a moss pole, trellis, stakes, or other structures to climb.
