Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed)

Asclepias tuberosa, commonly known as Butterfly Weed, is a hardy, low-maintenance perennial that delivers a brilliant show of tangerine-orange blooms from early to late summer. The vibrant clusters of flowers, sometimes showing red or yellow hues, are rich in nectar and pollen — irresistibly attracting Monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and other pollinators to the garden. With a long bloom season and minimal care requirements, this native wildflower is both beautiful and ecologically valuable.

After flowering, green seed pods form and later split open to reveal silky, silver-white seeds reminiscent of common milkweed. These pods add textural interest to the garden and can be used in dried arrangements. Long, sturdy stems make it an excellent cut flower — simply sear the cut ends briefly over a flame to seal in the sap.

Why It’s a Creekside Champion™:
This native perennial earns its place in our lineup for unmatched pollinator appeal, exceptional resilience, and outstanding performance in tough garden conditions. Its ability to thrive with little care while supporting Monarchs and other beneficial insects makes it one of the most impactful plants you can grow.
